Your Vote Really Fucking Matters

October 21, 2019 is fast approaching.

If you are Canadian, I hope you recognize the significance of that date. For those who aren’t Canadian, it is Election Day (E-Day).

Four years ago, Canadians voted for a Liberal majority government after three terms under a Conservative government. The Conservative Party of Canada held power from 2006 to 2015. It wasn’t exactly fun, which is why in 2015, the Harper government was voted out. There was a huge campaign of #AnythingButConservative (ABC) and it was successful.

Of course, the problem coming into the 2019 Federal Election is that the majority of Canadians don’t feel they have a strong candidate to stand behind. Or that the strong candidate they want is unlikely to win the election or even in their riding. Many people feel like they have to choose between Trudeau’s Liberals and Scheer’s Conservatives.

And I get it.

During the 2015 Federal Election, I felt lost. I knew that I did not want Stephen Harper to continue his reign over our country, but beyond that, I did not know where to go. I lived in a city where the Conservative candidate was basically guaranteed to win. I felt like it did not matter who I voted for because my voice was not going to be heard.

What I have come to realize this election is that the opposite is true.

Based on your riding, it may seem to be an impossibility that the candidate you truly support will win. What is true though, is that casting your vote for that candidate anyway tells whoever does win that there is at least one person out there that is saying ‘Fuck the status quo!’

And you know what else?

I saw a tweet yesterday that I shared on my Facebook that makes a great point about why voting matters.

As long as everyone believes that our only choices are the Liberals or Conservatives, we will only have one of those two parties in government.

One of the beautiful things about social media is that it has allowed people to come together and realize that they can make a difference. You are able to connect with people who are questioning whether these two major parties really deserve to be in power. You talk to others who are so afraid of a specific party *cough* conservatives *cough* getting elected, that they feel they have to vote for the other major party.

Here is the thing that everyone needs to keep in mind this election: YOUR VOTE REALLY FUCKING MATTERS. Especially if you want to vote NDP (New Democratic Party). They are gaining momentum and Jagmeet Singh is a huge part of that.

Okay, so the NDP might not actually win the 2019 election. That does not mean the fight is over.

Do you know how they win the next one?

There are people out there who are afraid to vote for the NDP because “they won’t win.” However, if the NDP has a huge wave of voters, it can show these people that this party does stand a chance on the national stage. It can allow those people to vote NDP in the next election.

I think it is pretty clear where I cast my vote this election. I am proud of that choice in a way that I never was about my Liberal vote. There is a huge wave of people ready to cast their vote for the NDP that need to know that their vote matters.

It really does.

The advanced polls are closed now and E-day is in ONE week.
