Top Ten Harry Potter Fan Theories

When in doubt (and swamped with school work), I go back to the basics and jump into the stories that I will forever love!

For something fun, I did a bit of research and found some enjoyable Harry Potter theories created by fans. Some have more evidence in canon than others, but they are all fun reading. Plus, they gave me a break from all of my school work.

Top Ten Harry Potter Fan Theories:

  1. Harry, Snape and Voldemort are the 3 brothers and Dumbledore is death
    • This is honestly one of my favourite theories and I stand behind it.
    • For those of you who haven’t heard of it before, the basic principle is that Harry, Snape, Voldemort and Dumbledore are all representative of a role from the Tale of the Three Brothers.
    • Voldemort is the first brother, who died for power.
    • Snape is the middle brother, who died for lost love.
    • Harry is the last brother, who greeted death as an old friend.
    • And, of course, Dumbledore is death. He orchestrates the whole story and greets Harry when he finds himself in King’s Cross after being hit with Avada Kedavra for a second time.
    • More on this theory can be found here.
  2. Crookshanks used to belong to Lily Potter
    • This one is a bit of a stretch based on timing alone, but I still love it.
    • When Hermione comes across Crookshanks at the Magical Menagerie, it is noted that the owner has had the cat for quite some time. The actual timeline is not mentioned.
    • Where this theory gets credence is from the interactions between Crookshanks and the animagus forms of Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew. The cat does not like Scabbers/Wormtail at all and are constantly fighting. However, Crookshanks is often seen wandering around the grounds with a black dog. The Potter’s cat would likely recognize the traitor and family friend and act accordingly.
    • Some more detail is listed here.
  3. Draco is a werewolf
    • Like some of the others on this list, I am not a proponent of this theory, but I have to give it credit that it has been thought out.
    • Basically, the idea is that Voldemort had Fernir Greyback turn Draco Malfoy as a punishment for Lucius’s failure in the Department of Mysteries. That Voldemort would consider making Draco a Death Eater a gift, rather than a punishment. What a better way to punish a pure blood family by ‘tainting’ their blood line.
    • I am not sure that I have a full understanding of the thought process, but you can find a website here and a link here to explain it a bit better.
  4. Dumbledore is a time-traveling Ron
    • According to the theory, there are four main reasons why this theory is real:
      • They’re both redheads
      • They both enjoy candy and chocolate
      • They’ve both injured their left legs at some point
      • They’re both written as having “large hands”
    • Personally, I do not think this one has any merit and J.K. Rowling has shut it down as a false theory. It is still an interesting one, so it made the list.
    • Here is a link for this theory.
  5. The Dursley’s were awful because Harry is a horcrux
    HP Theory 2
    HP Theory 2
    • I also do not think this one has merit. I believe it is used to shift blame, rather than acknowledge the Dursley’s abuse.
    • So this is what we know: the Dursley’s treat Harry terribly and horcruxes can cause people to be total jerks. Seems like there could be a correlation. The theory even states that they must have been good people to have kept Harry after all this time.
    • Here is the tumblr post that seemed to start it all.
    • But I have a huge bone to pick with this theory:
      1. Imagine, poor baby Harry living in a cupboard under the stairs. Even if they didn’t do it right away, there was a perfectly good bedroom upstairs that Harry could have had, but instead they kept him UNDER THE STAIRSYou know, a freaking child has to stay in a freaking cupboard, instead of the perfectly good room upstairs.
      2. Even if the horcrux in Harry was affecting them, when he came back from school each year, they should have been less horrible at first anyway. After all, Ron, Harry and Hermione were not immediately terrible people after putting the locket on. It was only after prolonged use that their temper came out. However, Harry shows up and right away the Dursley’s are being jerks. They only give him the second
      3. Why the bloody hell didn’t it affect everyone at Hogwarts? If it can affect the Dursley’s, it should be able to give everyone at the school trouble, especially the boys in the Gryffindor dorm.
    • So that got a bit heated… Moving on.
  6. Harry, Hermione and Ron are all representations of the other houses
    • After the last two theories, I do think this one has some truth to it.
    • The basic idea is that Harry, Hermione and Ron fit into the traits of the other Hogwarts Houses.
      • Harry represents Slytherin. The Sorting Hat even wants to put him there.
      • Hermione is Ravenclaw.
      • Ron represents Hufflepuff.
    • And the most important part is that they are only in Gryffindor because they asked to be. It is something that can’t be proven, of course. We only got to experience Harry’s sorting experience, but the theory assumes that Gryffindor is full of people who were brave enough to ask to be there.
    • A link about this can be found here.
  7. Harry will live forever now that he has defeated Voldemort
    • This theory is actually really depressing. It is based on the specific wording of the prophecy that Harry and Voldemort were both a part of.
    • Check out the image below:
    • HP Theory 2
    • I can’t explain it much better than that image, so if you want the full story, you can find it here.
  8. George Weasley is Willy Wonka
    • This one is more just for fun, if you ignore that the reasoning behind it is that Fred died. Here is the supposed evidence:
      • They both make a line of sweets designed to help children fake being sick to get off school.
      • They both like to pull ‘pranks’
      • They are both ginger
      • Wonka says that he’s a tad deaf in one ear, while George lost one of his.
    • This one comes from a Cracked article, which you can find here.
    • Within canon, it doesn’t really have its place, but it is still a funny little thought.
  9. Trelawney is right about Harry’s birthday. Well, sort of.
    • This one is hardly even a fan theory, but there are doubts about Trelawney’s divination abilities, so I wanted to share it.
    •
      Trelawney's Prediction
    • That is the direct line from the scene in Prison of Azkaban when Trelawney guesses that Harry was born in midwinter. We all have a good laugh because we all know that Harry was born in July.
    • However, there is a theory that Trelawney was unknowingly sensing the horcrux, part of Tom Riddle’s soul. Guess who was born in midwinter.
    • There is a brief explanation here.
  10. Neville is using the wrong wand
    • While this is not my favourite theory, I truly love it. I think it has complete merit in a series where “the wand chooses the wizard.”
    • We find out later in the series that Neville has been using his dad’s wand until it is broken in the battle at the Department of Mysteries. It is clear throughout the story that wands work best for the wizard they choose originally, so could this be why Neville has so much difficulty with his wand work in the first five books. After getting his own wand, he actually comes into his own. How great could he have been if he had the right wand the whole time?
    • You can find out more here.

So there you have it: my top ten Harry Potter fan theories.

You can find the theories above and much more by clicking here. Also, if you check out tumblr for more than 30 minutes, you will probably find at least ten new ones. Not going to lie, it is one of the reasons that I have tumblr.

Have you heard any of these? Any to add? What is the most outlandish fan theory you have heard/seen? I’d love to hear them.
